Khaled Atieh (1964) was born in Amman, Jordan. He is of Palestinian origin and has never received
any education in Fine Arts. Born deaf and dumb, Khaled’s early childhood was spent in Egypt where
he lived for several years. Already at this very young age, Khaled enjoyed drawing and painting.
After his return to Jordan he was trained as a carpenter in a special school for deaf and dumb children
close to the capital Amman.
After working as a carpenter for a few years he completely switched to painting. Since 1987 he has taught
Fine Arts Painting at the University of Jordan in Amman.
Khaled Atieh works mainly with oil on canvas. His paintings are fascinating and versatile. Every single work
shows a surprising composition of colours and shapes. Every time one looks at them one finds new elements.
Inspired by people and animals, his paintings are sometimes quiet and balanced, sometimes impulsive and
unpredictable, mysterious and frightening, colourful and explosive. Some of his paintings have a mysterious
beauty, in which one clearly recognizes his Arabic origins.
Over the past ten years his paintings have been shown in various group and solo exhibitions in different
countries in the Middle East. In Jordan, he frequently exhibits at The Royal Cultural Centre in Amman.
In the Netherlands his paintings have been shown at various group exhibitions in Gelderland and Noord-Brabant
and at solo exhibitions in Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Tilburg.
In 1997, he spent a month in the Netherlands.
In 2001, he won the First Prize in Al-Shariqa University Competition for Fine Arts in the United Arab Emirates.
